Elizabeth Bennett in Pride and Prejudice plays the piano and mesmerizes
Darcy.
Elizabeth Bennett (Pride and Prejudice) was invited by Georgina and
Darcy to Pemberly for dinner. There, Elizabeth and Georgina took
turns in playing the piano and singing. A woman of the upper class
must have thorough knowledge of music (which includes playing the piano)
singing, drawing, dancing and the modern languages. Jane Austen
herself played the piano. In the late 18th-19th century, the piano
was the means by which a woman provide songs and entertainment for the
family. Women make frequent trips to the post office to check on
the arrival of the latest piece of music journal or periodicals.
