Now that Kate Middleton is married to the Prince, piano enthusiasts wonder whether Princess Kate has ever taken piano lessons.

47 year old Daniel Nicholls is the man who taught Kate Middleton and most of her family (mother Carole, sister Pippa and brother James) how to play piano. He lives only a stone’s throw away from the Middleton family home in Bucklebury, Berkshire.

According to Daniel Nicholls, Kate Middleton studied piano from the years 1995 to 1997 and can play up to Grade 3 level. Not enough to be a concert pianist, but enough to appreciate music.

This piano teacher has made a special gift for the Royal couple’s wedding by composing his own song for the couple. He has also sent a recording of “A Song for Kate (and William)” to them as a unique wedding present. It was written as a duet, with parts for William and Kate.

Below is a video clip of the song sung by the eharmonic choir.

Adults learning to play piano have no time to go through tedious piano lessons that are designed for children. it. Many adults tried formal piano lessons for years, and manage to play a few classical pieces as long as the sheet music is handy.

It is always best to learn piano at a young age, when there are no family responsibilities and plenty to time. For those who missed out due to lack of opportunity, it is never too late. Many retired adults or empty nesters suddenly find themselves with time on their hands and are turning to piano as a hobby.

Face it, adults learning piano at a late age in life do not have the time and patience to memorize or practice classical music notes to perfection. They simply want to play a few popular music pieces for fun and enjoyment. Thus, the popularity of the piano chords software and ebooks. Adults have the discipline and focus to teach themselves through a book, software or videos. Piano ebooks or videos features easy piano chord fingering techniques, and with today’s video technology, we can watch the finger movements of the players, again and again by hitting the replay button.

Here is a piece of software or ebooks called Piano for All, that suits adult piano learners well. Considering the costs of piano lessons versus the cost of ebooks/software, ebooks are cheap and they keep.

Just check out this sample lesson page.

For the romantics and Jane Austen fans, this scene is simply unforgettable.

Elizabeth Bennett (Pride and Prejudice) was invited by Georgina and Darcy to Pemberly for dinner. There, Elizabeth and Georgina took turns in playing the piano and singing.

There have been several movie remakes of Pride and Prejudice, but my favorite one is the BBC series featuring Colin Firth as Darcy.

In the late 18th-19th century, the piano was the means by which a woman provide songs and entertainment for the family. Women make frequent trips to the post office to check on the arrival of the latest piece of music journal or periodicals. A woman of the upper class must have thorough knowledge of music (which includes playing the piano) singing, drawing, dancing and the modern languages. Jane Austen herself played the piano.

Ever wonder what to do with used pianos? Touring internationally since 2008, ‘Play Me, I’m Yours’ is an artwork by artist Luke Jerram placing used, refurbished pianos in major cities at all kinds of locations including outdoors and indoors. These pianos are also known as street pianos, because they appear at many major street intersections.

The photo above shows a street piano at the London Liverpool Street Station. 30 free-to-use pianos have been scattered around old London town as a part of this month’s Sing London festival, encouraging pedestrians to hit the keys and engage with their urban environment.

Street pianos are appearing in cities across the world. Located in parks, squares, bus shelters and train stations, outside galleries, markets and on bridges and ferries, the pianos are for any member of the public to enjoy and claim ownership of. So far, Jerram has installed 167 pianos in 8 different cities worldwide.

Who plays them and how long they remain is up to each community. Each piano acts as sculptural, musical, blank canvas that becomes a reflection of the communities it is embedded into. Many pianos are personalised and decorated.

Questioning the ownership and rules of public space ‘Play Me, I’m Yours’ is a provocation, inviting the public to engage with, activate and take ownership of their urban environment.

Here is a French poster of a woman giving child piano instruction with richly colored background, by a French illustrator-artist named Eugene Oge.

This poster could be named: First Piano Lesson. The first lesson is being given by an instructor in a green dress to a red-headed youngster in a beige print. With the red and yellow background and indigo carpet, the richly-colored poster could easily have been a skirmish of competing hues. But Oges keen eye melds them together harmoniously in this quaint design.

Oges principal claim to fame was his long tenure as house artist for printer Charles Verneau around the turn of the century; he also, however, produced numerous drawings that were well-received in fine-art circles. Eugene Oge, a did a number of great advertising during his lifetime from 1861-1936. He was a major figure in the Belle Epoque and did many outstanding ads for resorts, food, and all sorts of beverage brands.

As a piano teacher, this is one of the collection I have on my piano studio.

A retrospective exhibition of all his posters drew a large audience at the Bibliotheque Forney in Paris during the summer of 1998.
